Unit Sizes & Availability
What size storage unit do I need for my belongings?
A 5x5 fits a walk-in closet of items, a 5x10 fits a small studio or dorm, a 10x10 fits a one-bedroom home, a 10x15 fits a two-bedroom home, a 10x20 fits a small garage or three-bedroom home, and a 10x30 fits a four- to five-bedroom home. Use our Size Guide or call (248) 859-8533 and we'll recommend a unit based on what you're storing.
Can I change the size of my unit if my needs change?
Yes. If you need a larger or smaller unit, stop by the office or call us. Size changes are subject to availability and we'll handle the paperwork on the spot.
What if the size I want isn't available?
Call us at (248) 859-8533 or ask to be put on a waitlist. Units turn over frequently, and we'll notify you the moment one opens up.
Climate-Controlled Storage in Michigan
What is a drive-up climate-controlled unit, and why would I want one?
A drive-up climate-controlled unit combines the convenience of drive-up access with the temperature and humidity protection of an indoor climate-controlled unit. Most facilities make you choose one or the other. We do not. These are the only drive-up climate-controlled units on Dixie Highway.
Do you offer climate-controlled storage in Clarkston?
Yes. We offer both standard climate-controlled and drive-up climate-controlled units. Climate control protects against Michigan's temperature swings and humidity, keeping items like wood furniture, electronics, documents, and collectibles in better condition long-term.
Do I need climate control for my items in Michigan?
If you're storing wood furniture, leather, electronics, photos, documents, artwork, musical instruments, or anything sensitive to humidity or cold, climate-controlled storage is worth it in Michigan. If you're storing yard equipment, patio furniture, or tools, standard drive-up storage is usually fine.
Access, Security & Facility Safety
Can I access my storage unit 24 hours a day?
Yes. Every renter gets their own keypad gate code and can access their unit any time, day or night, seven days a week. The office is staffed from 7 AM to 10 PM daily if you need help.
What security measures protect my stored items?
The facility is fully fenced, keypad-gated, lit with dusk-to-dawn LED lighting, and recorded 24/7 with high-definition video surveillance. Only renters with an active code can enter.
What hours can I reach the office?
The office is open 7 AM to 10 PM every day of the week. Call (248) 859-8533 any time during office hours.
Does the facility have fire protection?
Yes. The facility is built to code with proper fire protection and the office is insured and alarmed.
Location & Service Area
How close are you to I-75?
We're about a mile off I-75, just south of the Dixie Highway / Clarkston exit. Easy to find, easy to drive a moving truck in and out of.
Do you serve Waterford, Independence Township, Ortonville, and nearby towns?
Yes. Most of our renters come from Clarkston, Independence Township, Waterford, Ortonville, Davisburg, Springfield Township, and Lake Orion. We're centrally located for Oakland County.
Pricing, Discounts & First Month Free
How much does storage cost at Clarkston Self Storage?
Pricing depends on unit size and whether you want climate-controlled, drive-up, or drive-up climate-controlled. Online rates are usually better than walk-in rates. Call (248) 859-8533 or check availability online for current pricing.
Is there a first-month-free offer? What are the terms?
Yes. New renters get the first month free when you rent online. There is no commitment past the first month; you can move out any time after with advance notice. Taxes and a one-time admin fee may apply.
Do you offer long-term or pre-pay discounts?
Yes. Ask about pre-pay or long-term pricing when you rent. Rates can lock in when you pay multiple months upfront.
Payments & Billing
Can I pay online? Is auto-pay available?
Yes. You can pay online through our tenant portal and set up auto-pay with a credit or debit card. Most renters set it and forget it.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards, ACH bank transfer, and cash at the office.
What happens if I miss a payment?
You'll get reminders before and after the due date. A late fee applies after a grace period. If the balance stays overdue, access to the unit can be restricted until it's paid.
Reserving & Moving In
Do I need to buy a lock, or do you provide one?
We sell high-quality disc locks in the office, or you can bring your own. We recommend a disc lock over a standard padlock for better security.
Do I need insurance on my stored items?
We strongly recommend insurance. Many homeowners and renters insurance policies already cover items in storage. We also offer a low-cost protection plan at move-in.
What is the minimum rental term?
Month-to-month. No long-term contract required. Stay one month or stay years - your choice.
How do I reserve a unit online?
Click Rent Online on any page, pick your size, pick your move-in date, pay the first month's charge (or claim first month free), and you'll get a gate code right away. The whole process takes about two minutes.
Vehicle Storage, Prohibited Items & Move-Out
Can I store a boat, RV, car, or motorcycle?
Yes. We offer covered and open vehicle parking for boats, RVs, trailers, cars, and motorcycles. Ask about availability and size options.
What items are not allowed in storage?
Perishable food, live plants, animals, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, explosives, and anything illegal. If you're not sure whether something is allowed, call us.
How do I move out when I'm done?
Give us 10 days' written notice (email or in-person at the office works). Clear out the unit, remove your lock, and we'll close out the account. No penalties, no long-term contract.
